What is 2Mynds MBT?
The mind-body package deal
Your body does not work without your mind and your mind doesn’t work without your body – they’re a package deal. For some reason though, most physical movement disciplines focus on physical aspects only when it comes to training. The mental aspects are often left for the sports psychologist or mental coach. Conversely, when mental training takes place, the physical aspects and applications of the mental skills in functional environments are often left for the athletes themselves or their sport-specific coaches. This scattered approach separates mental from physical aspects to let the experts do their work and to keep their life simple. We believe making life easy for coaches is is a bad motivation when it comes to athletic development, especially if it leaves the athlete with a sub-optimal learning, training, and application environment.
To optimize mind-body integration in athletic development, while actually making life easier for athletes and coaches, we developed 2Mynds – our mind-body training system for mental fitness.
We identify the 2Mynds approach as mind-body training or MBT. Mind-body training is often seen as the same thing as mind-body interventions (MBI), but this is wrong. The term intervention has a much broader meaning than the term training – interventions can be undergone passively (like many medical interventions such as drugs, surgery, physical therapy) and training is something that involves autonomous actions (like physical fitness training, yoga, or biofeedback training).
Since training can be an intervention – if it is aimed at changing a prognosis – mind-body training is clearly a subset of mind-body interventions.
The 2Mynds flavor of MBT
Although the term mind-body training or the acronym MBT are clearly not new, the 2Mynds version of MBT it is very unique and we devised it specifically this way to optimize it for mental fitness training. This is an important consideration:
2Mynds MBT, although it has physical aspects, is designed for optimal development of mental skills and it is not designed to optimize physical skills. This doesn’t mean that 2Mynds MBT does not have physical benefits, it just means they are a nice side effect of the overall approach to optimize mental fitness.
The most unique feature of 2Mynds MBT is that mental (mind) and physical (body) components are alternated and progressed with a set methodology to create a combo workout. Of course you could only the physical parts or the mental parts, but combining them and progressing them has special advantages.
Why 2Mynds MBT works
The theory is extremely simple and can best be described as follows:
Mental skills are needed most when people are under pressure and in real-life situations. This means that optimal mental training regimens progress to pressure and transition to function – adding more uncertainty, complexity, and applicability and… movement! Movement complexity and movement difficulty are therefore important tools in mental skills training.
This immediately explains why 2Mynds MBT works so well:
- The physical exercises are integrated in two ways that create progressive stress: (1) the progression in difficulty and complexity (strength, range of motion, coordination, balance, speed, endurance) and (2) the increased loading (increased heart-rate, blood pressure, fatigue). This creates a training ground that pushes mental and physical comfort boundaries – similar to the real-life performance situations – and makes any skill that is trained a functional skill that translates to the actual situations in which it is needed.
- There is a large variety of workouts and the physical training progresses from stability to mobility to agility and eventually leading to playful exercises that mimic function. Ultimately, tennis players can progress their workouts from versions where the physical components are basic locomotion exercises (that can still be quite hard) to tennis drills with live hitting. This means that the mental skills are not only trained under physiological conditions that are similar to the real-life situation, they are even trained in physical and psychological conditions that resemble the real-life situation.
- Finally, mental exercises by themselves tend to have very little appeal to human beings. Many young people prefer to play with their phone if they are going to sit still. Doing a 5 minute meditative exercise is already too much for many. However, alternating physical and mental exercises can make the whole workout more fun and more intense. Time flies when you are having fun, but when time flies it is also often interpreted as more fun.
We believe this is extremely logical and we are still scratching our head as to why nobody thought of that before or didn’t implement it systematically. In terms of scientific research explicitly using this approach, we are currently involved in academic projects and will update this post as soon as more information becomes available.
2Mynds is more than MBT
There is more to 2Mynds than just MBT. 2Mynds is a methodological system (using specific methods) as well as a technological system (using specific technology). We use a test-learn-train-apply paradigm that forms a red line throughout our methods as well as our technology. We realize like no other that even if we have a method that works, if the delivery sucks it’s going nowhere. This is why we have worked and will continue to work hard on web app and the underlying infrastructure. We have separate pages that give the 2Mynds story and that explain how it works.
